Background

After World War II, Dornier began developing a single-engine liaison aircraft with STOL capabilities in Spain. It made its maiden flight as the Dornier Do 25 on June 25, 1954, in Seville. The second prototype was fitted with a Continental engine. To accommodate a more powerful engine, the landing gear had to be reinforced, the fuel tanks redesigned, and the vertical stabilizer enlarged.

The first Do 27 flew in Germany on October 17, 1956. By 1965, more than 600 units had been built in Germany, including 428 for the German armed forces. In Spain, CASA built 50 units under license as Do 27A-1s, designated C-127. Spain also received an additional 26 Do 27s transferred from the Bundeswehr inventory.
